Specialization is defined as the process of concentrating on and becoming an expert in a particular subject or skill. Within the realm of investing, PIMCO has become synonymous with fixed income, as the firm has developed unparalleled expertise and mastery of this asset class due to it being their central focus. In this ETF Issuer article, we will look at the existing ETF product offerings of PIMCO Canada, highlighting the investment solutions that are most prominent on their shelf and how they can be of benefit to investors.

PIMCO Introduction

PIMCO, or Pacific Investment Management Company, is a global investment management firm that specializes in fixed income. Founded in 1971, PIMCO has grown to become one of the world's premier bond investment managers. The firm’s research-driven approach to fixed-income investing has allowed them to stay attuned to regional and global economic trends; using economic indicators, market trends, and individual securities to make informed investment choices. As of September 30th, 2023, PIMCO’s assets under management are $1.74 Trillion.

PIMCO Investment Philosophy

PIMCO's investment philosophy is rooted in the belief that active management, rigorous research, and a forward-looking perspective can lead to superior investment outcomes. The firm seeks to identify opportunities and risks in the global fixed-income markets, aiming to deliver attractive risk-adjusted returns for its clients.

Key elements of PIMCO’s investment philosophy include:

Top-Down and Bottom-Up Analysis: PIMCO combines top-down analysis of macroeconomic trends with bottom-up analysis of individual securities. This dual approach allows the firm to understand the broader economic environment while also assessing the specific merits of potential investments.

Risk Management: PIMCO places a strong emphasis on risk management. The firm seeks to identify and manage risks at both the portfolio and individual security levels, aiming to protect capital and generate consistent returns.

Diversification: Diversification is a fundamental principle of PIMCO's investment philosophy. By investing across a broad range of fixed-income securities and market sectors, the firm aims to spread risk and enhance the potential for consistent returns.

PIMCO Solutions

Though PIMCO Canada’s current ETF offerings are limited, each solution provides a distinct value proposition that can be of benefit to investors.

PIMCO Monthly Income ETF | Ticker: PMIF | ETF Shares Class AUM (Nov. 30, 2023): $2,026,750,104

The PIMCO Monthly Income fund is the firm’s stand-out solution and provides investors with access to global fixed income exposure. For income-oriented investors, the fund’s underlying strategy offers the potential for a relatively high and consistent stream of income with an emphasis on high-quality fixed income securities. The Fund is actively managed to maximize current income while maintaining a relatively low-risk profile, with a secondary goal of capital appreciation.

PIMCO Managed Core Bond Pool ETF | Ticker: PCOR | ETF Shares Class AUM (Nov. 30, 2023): $67,809,794

This single-ticket solution utilizes PIMCO products as the building block for its underlying investment strategy. The ETF can be used as a core holding for an investor’s fixed income needs, serving as an attractive option for those looking to invest in a diversified portfolio of fixed-income securities seeking a combination of income and growth. The fund allocates and rebalances across the underlying funds based on PIMCO’s assessment of the fixed income markets and the underlying funds’ ability to help the Fund meet its stated investment objectives.

Regarding the Fund’s allocation, the PIMCO Monthly Income Fund is approximately 48%. The other holdings of the pool include PIMCO mutual funds, namely, the PIMCO Canadian Total Return Bond Fund (25%), PIMCO Investment Grade Credit Fund (14%), PIMCO Flexible Global Bond Fund (10%), and PIMCO Unconstrained Bond Fund (2%).

PIMCO Global Short Maturity ETF | Ticker: PMNT | ETF Shares Class AUM (Nov. 30, 2023): $39,284, 634

The objective of this solution is to provide investors with ultra-short, high-quality fixed income securities that offer higher income potential than traditional cash investments, with modest additional risk. This actively managed fund invests in a wide range of short-dated securities such as U.S. Treasury and agency securities, investment grade credit and high-quality structured credit; and is more resistant to interest rate fluctuations than longer-term bonds, resulting in generally lower price volatility.

PIMCO Investment Grade Credit ETF | Ticker: IGCF | ETF Shares Class AUM (Nov. 30, 2023): $14,428,991

Focusing primarily on corporate bonds, this solution will provide investors with broad exposures to corporate credit across industries, issuers and regions of the corporate bond sector and can seek to add value through investments in high-quality U.S. government bonds, mortgages and foreign bonds.

PIMCO Low Duration Monthly Income ETF | Ticker: PLDI | ETF Shares Class AUM (Nov. 30, 2023): $12,006,786

Managing interest rate risk is foundational to fixed income investing, as such, this solution is intended for investors who need steady income with low interest rate exposure. The fund’s multi-sector approach allows it to seek out the best income-generating ideas in any market climate, targeting multiple sources of income and low-interest rate exposure from a global opportunity set.

PIMCO Managed Conservative Bond Pool ETF | Ticker: PCON | ETF Shares Class AUM (Nov. 30, 2023): $2,714,683

Similar to PCOR, this ETF is a single-ticket solution that utilizes PIMCO products as the building block for its underlying investment strategy. While investors interested in PCON will have a diversified fixed income exposure, the ETF’s conservative nature is reflected in its asset allocation, as the PIMCO Low Duration Monthly Income Fund and PIMCO Short Maturity Fund are 40% and 20% of the fund’s underlying allocation, respectively. Hence, the fund is intended for investors seeking low-duration exposure and a cash-equivalent-like investment experience.

Conclusion

Though PIMCO Canada’s current ETF product range is limited, the firm’s renowned expertise in fixed income investing is reflected in the intentionality of its ETF offerings. For investors that are seeking fixed income solutions that can be ballast to their portfolio or provide exposure to global, high-quality credit, there is fixed income solution within PIMCO Canada’s lineup that can facilitate your investment needs in a meaningful way.
